2022 Tournament Results

Well . . . it was quite the weather weekend for sure for the 31st annual Turkey Tournament. We did it! The only words that come to mind are . . .  FAST, FURIOUS and FORTUNATE!

We had a great turnout with 435 registrations and 28 draws to complete. Herculean efforts by Green Tree and tournament staff plus the all important “lucky” factor to get tourney matches on and draws completed against almost impossible odds.

We had 36 matches slated for Friday evening at Blossom. Absolutely critical to get those in as we had very large draws in the men’s 3.5 & 4.0 singles as well as their doubles draws. At Green Tree, we had less but were using all seven courts and needed to get those draws started. FORTUNATELY, we got all forty matches in at both sites.

On Saturday we had a Turkey Tourney first . . . we did not run one single match on Saturday. This has never happened before in 31 years. We’ve had rain before but never all day. Rain, rain, cold, more rain, more cold and then we were done for Saturday.

We decided to start fresh on Sunday. We went to a no add 8 game pro-set and changed draw times and moved many of the finals that were originally scheduled at GT, to ATC. Match times with 8 game pro-set format went to one hour so all these changes were made. All was posted to the website and we were off to the races on Sunday!

Both GT and ATC were packed. It was dry, chilly FAST & FURIOUS! It was so great to see everyone out playing and having fun. The essence of the tournament is our “love for the game” and gosh did it show. Everyone was so happy to be playing . . . thanked all us involved in the tournament a number of times for our hard work and effort to get the tournament matches on.

I have many people to thank. Thank you to Debbie Lowry and Pam Sommer who ran the tournament desk at Anne Marie Tennis Center. Lots and lots of matches plus quick turnaround times. Pretty crazy but they did it! A very long day for them working 8 AM to 10 PM. Thank you to our head teaching pro, Dave Briddle, who ran the tourney desk at Green Tree. Always the professional . . . he is so accomplished and did a great job.

Thank you to my son, Matthew Mayer, who is a graphic design professional and designed the t-shirt and the turkey tourney banners. Thank you to Scott Sowards who was behind the scenes getting the 28 draws as well as several weather updates posted to the club’s website. This communication was critical to getting the tournament organized for Sunday play.

Thank you to all of YOU that came out and played and honestly, it was most of you. A great turnout in spite of all the twists and turns! Most importantly, you had such great attitudes . . . so joyful and happy to be able to play.

Always the essence of this uniquely engaging holiday tournament is that we play for “the love of the game”. It was never more evident this past weekend with players, staff and spectators.

All of us at Green Tree . . .  myself, our members, our wonderful club and tourney staff . . .  thank you for your wonderful support of what is a very special tournament for us to host and run.

I will see you next year for the 32nd. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday season
